In view of the shortage of skilled workers, many companies in Upper Lusatia are coming up with ways to find new staff. They advertise special benefits in job ads. One company even offers its own beach.
The company Thermotech AG in Vierkirchen has its own bathing lake with beach for its employees.
The applicant market in Upper Lusatia is highly competitive. Engineers and mechatronics technicians, for example, are particularly in demand, as are bakers and sales staff. So if you’re looking for new staff, you have to offer something more than the competition. Like Thermotec AG in Arnsdorf in the municipality of Vierkirchen near Görlitz. It has about 40 employees who develop and manufacture electric radiators. It, too, is looking for new people, from mechanical engineers to production workers. But attracting well-trained specialists to little Arnsdorf, with its population of around 500, is not so easy.
The extras make the difference
The company has turned its hidden location at a former quarry to its advantage: a small swimming lake belongs to the company premises. “We have had sand piled up there for a beach, and there is also a bathing island,” says Daniel Kube of Thermotec AG’s board of directors. Employees could spend their breaks there, which had been especially popular during the hot summer. The aim is to create a pleasant working atmosphere, says Kube. After all, working time is also lifetime. For applicants, such extras could tip the scales in favor of a job. So the company advertises the swimming lake, free cold drinks and a collegial corporate culture in its job ads.
Significantly more special services
More and more Upper Lusatian companies are highlighting such special services in their job advertisements, Mike Altmann from the Lusatia Matrix association has noted. The association operates the regional job exchange jobs-oberlausitz.de. In general, it can be said that employers have made significant gains in extras such as the 13th month’s salary, daycare allowances or bonuses, according to Altmann. However, a look at the job exchange also shows more unusual offers: For example, a baker from Seifhennersdorf offers a 1,500 euro welcome bonus for a baker or pastry chef. Others advertise an in-house fitness area and fuel vouchers, fresh fruit or massages.
Junior staff work remains important
At ULT AG from Löbau, employees have recently been able to lease a bicycle – one of many extras offered by the company. The family-run company develops and builds extraction and filtration equipment for industry. The aim is to create a good working atmosphere so that employees stay with the company for a long time after they have been hired, says company spokesman Stefan Meißner. That’s why ULT has had things like fuel vouchers, flexible working hours and subsidies for daycare costs for many years. Nevertheless, the search for skilled workers remains difficult, says Meißner. The company has a good reputation not only in the region: in 2016, the company bosses were named Saxony’s Entrepreneur of the Year. In order to find personnel, ULT therefore relies not only on extras and a good working atmosphere, but also on junior staff development. To this end, it works closely with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and the schools.
